The 10 sources AI cites most behind buyer questions, across 95 companies

Short answer. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a category question with no brand in it, the answer isn’t built from your site. It’s built from other people’s pages. We measured this on 95 companies: reddit.com appeared behind the answers for 91% of them, youtube.com for 89%. Then comes a cliff. The third source, linkedin.com, reaches 48%, and only 2 sources appear behind at least half of the companies. Of all 39,516 cited links we logged, 1.5% pointed at the company being asked about.
All companies: the 10 sources AI cites most
Ranked by breadth: for how many of the 95 firms the site showed up at least once behind a reply to their buyers’ questions. We don’t rank by raw link count, because one client’s niche can flood it. A single education client alone pushed four university domains into the top 15 by links.

How to read this
The list says where the answer about your category gets decided. If the top of your category is a forum, a video platform and two directories, that’s where getting picked is won or lost. Your own site is mostly where the engine confirms details. It’s why our own site scored zero on 351 answers while passing every technical check, and why only 1.5% of sources point at the company itself.
What we do with it: the free audit shows this table for your domain and your questions. Monitoring tracks it every week and flags when a source appears or disappears behind your questions. Wrong prices or facts inside those answers are a separate check, Fact Integrity.
Method and limits
- What we asked. Category buyer questions generated from each company’s own site, with no brand names in them. Three repetitions per engine per run. The prompts are frozen per firm, so repeats stay comparable.
- Engines. ChatGPT (the OpenAI model family through the API with web search), Gemini and Perplexity in every audit; Claude in the one-time full audits. Google AI Overviews are read as sources where available.
- What we counted. Across the 95 companies we measured every URL an engine returned as a source for a reply, reduced to its domain. A site counts once per company, no matter how often it was cited. The companies’ own domains aren’t in the ranking; we report their share separately (1.5%).
- Sample. 95 companies, 39,516 cited links, 13,436 distinct source domains, 2026-06-25 to 2026-09-29. The firms are whoever ran an audit. So the mix leans towards marketing, software and e-commerce, with a Polish tilt in some niches. We show an industry table only where we’ve got at least 5 companies.
- What this isn’t. It isn’t a ranking of what AI “trusts”, and it isn’t a promise that a mention on a listed source gets you named. It’s a count of where the answers came from in this sample. And it moves: the sources behind the same question turn over by about two thirds day to day.
